Sir, In the light of the recent Olympic success of Michelle Smith and the totally unfair and uncalled for treatment of her by the American media, I must make it clear that they in no way represent the feelings of the majority of Americans, who recognise and acknowledge great athletic achievement.
To suggest, even remotely, that Ms Smith's improved swimming performances since the last Olympic Games were the result of something other than natural ability and rigorous training is typical of media that choose to sensationalise events rather than report the facts.
As an American temporarily living in Ireland, allow me to offer heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for continued success to Michelle Smith. The gold medals she brings back, along with the honour and pride she brings to Ireland, will far outlast any unpleasantness brought, on by the American media. -
