Long wait for redundancy payment

Madam, – Your report by Ronan McGreevy (" Sunday Tribune staff protest over redundancy", February 25th) highlighted the fact that because staff are legally entitled to only statutory redundancy from the State's Insolvency Payment Scheme, it could be six to eight months before they receive their redundancy money.

Apart from the stress, anger and disappointment, individuals who lose their jobs in such a manner must feel, surely it is scandalous that they must wait such a long period of time to receive money they would need simply to survive in the immediate aftermath of losing their jobs?

Considering it was election day yesterday and the votes we cast are likely to leave many outgoing TDs and Ministers out of a job, I wonder if these individuals also need to wait periods of six to eight months for their rather more generous payouts? While I take no joy in seeing anybody lose their job, regrettably the cynic in me suggests that outgoing TDs and Ministers will not have to wait extensive periods to receive their payouts.

I hope the incoming government will review such circumstances as a matter of urgency. In a time of economic uncertainty, it is surely unfair that individuals who want to work and lose their jobs should have their statutory entitlements delayed in such a manner. The rules should apply equally to everyone. – Yours, etc,
