A chara, - In her article, "Ghosts among the mists" (Weekend, November 11th), Mary Maloney mentions literary figures who are buried in Mount Jerome. The memorial to William Carleton (1794-1849) is described as "a fine tribute to a writer who reflected on the hidden Gaelic world and its rural surroundings".

In her visit to the cemetery she may not have noticed the unobtrusive granite headstone which marks the grave of the distinguished Irish writer Mairtin O Cadhain (1907-1970), who was Professor of Irish at Trinity College, Dublin. He not only came from the Gaelic world, but had a true appreciation of its language and its culture in general. He wrote many books, the last of which was published posthumously in 1977, but, in the context of Mary Maloney's article, it is most appropriate that I should mention his most outstanding literary work, Cre na Cille. - Is mise, etc.,
