Liffey boardwalk and local government

Sir, – Peter White (August 22nd) writes of his concerns about policing on the Liffey boardwalk and cycling on the Royal Canal, while Stephen O’Byrnes on the same day comments on the perceptions of visitors to our city. Both criticise Dublin City Council for these failures.

Local government in Ireland has no authority over policing, and the Royal and Grand Canals in Dublin are inexplicably under the control of Waterways Ireland. In one of the many “reforms” pushed though by central government (both permanent and temporary), Dublin City Council has no direct role in tourism in the city. – Yours, etc,

Cllr DERMOT LACEY,

Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
