Madam, - On a recent edition of Today with Pat Kenny on RTÉ radio, it emerged that the reason why there are virtually no lay-bys on our roads is (as I always suspected) because local authorities fear they would be occupied by members of the Travelling community.
It is obvious that the provision of a reasonable number of properly signposted and lay-bys would contribute to road safety by encouraging fatigued motorists to rest. However, because their subsequent management might create problems for local authorities the decision is not to provide them.
How typical this is of the official mindset. Doing nothing is the preferred solution when taking action (however desirable) might cause problems. - Yours, etc,
