Madam, – I refer to Miriam Lord’s article (Miriam Lord’s Week, Weekend Review, April 23rd) Ciaran Lynch, Labour, said, “Sinn Féin would like us to think that there is a crock of black gold at the end of the rainbow . . . but in reality there is no such thing. There is no magic wand that we can wave over the ocean to make millions of barrels of oil appear from the mist in the Irish waters, and that will abate the economic problems that we currently face.” Juxtapose this with an article published on the same day , “The largest concerted oil and gas drilling campaign ever carried out off the coast of Ireland will begin this summer in search of reserves which a government study has suggested could be worth as much as $1 trillion at current prices.” The prospect of commercial finds have been described by industry watchers as the brightest for decades.

Hmmm. Who do I believe? I guess the oil industry watchers clinches it over the bumbling politicians. – Yours, etc,
