Sir, – Will the State give us all one year’s moratorium on our TV licences given that we are being forced (yes, forced) to upgrade our TV service by buying a “box” to receive digital TV without which apparently the TV channels we pay an annual fee for will no longer be available?

In other words, if we don’t spend the money on adapting our TVs, we will be deprived of TV channels, though we will, of course, still have to pay the annual licence fee.

What will be next? Perhaps forcing us to buy dishwashers that we don’t need on pain of having our water supply cut off if we don’t. Or maybe forcing us to upgrade our car on pain of having our perfectly adequate car impounded if we don’t. Outrageous. – Yours, etc,
