Honduran crisis

Madam, – The continued refusal by the military coup leaders in Honduras to allow back its constitutionally elected President Zelaya should be a matter of grave concern to the International community. For this coup to succeed the Honduran military had to have the implicit support from the CIA and in a further twist of this saga the Catholic Church was and continues to be embroiled in the ousting of the president who had become too “left-leaning” for the ruling elites.

Mr Micheletti, the president installed by the Honduran military, has publicly thanked the Catholic Church for its support in the coup and now Cardinal Rodriguez of Honduras has called for ousted President Zelaya not to return.

It seems that the Catholic Church is reverting to its traditional role in Latin American politics by supporting right-wing military governments rather than respecting the right of peoples to elect governments of their choice. Democracy is praiseworthy only if right-wing military-supported leaders are “elected”. – Yours, etc,
