Sir, – It is well remembered by sports fans how Charlie Haughey triumphed in the Tour de France (with incidental help from Stephen Roche) and how then-minister for sport Shane Ross achieved his peak in the Olympics in Rio. Like others, I’m struggling to identify and assimilate the “new normal”. However, there was a notable absence of such worthies ingratiating and wedging themselves into photographs with our returning Olympic champions, as was the norm in the past.
