Higgins and the Nally case

Madam, - Senator Jim Higgins, referring to the failure of gardaí to act on two bench warrants for the arrest of the now deceased traveller John Ward, said recently: "If the court order had been obeyed, Mr Ward would probably be alive today and Mr Nally would be at home on his farm in Co Mayo" (The Irish Times, January 10th).

Presumably, Mr Ward would also still be alive had Padraig Nally not decided to shoot him. While one can understand why Senator Higgins, with a view to regaining his lost Dáil seat, may be trying to garner support from the disaffected farming community in Co Mayo, surely this is really scraping the barrel. - Yours, etc,
