Sir, - On behalf of Keep Ireland Open I would like to respond: to A. C. Horsman's letter (March 27th) re green roads in Jersey. Rural speed limits are certainly also badly needed here on our by roads. Walkers and cyclists take their lives in their hands when using these roads. I am sure we have all witnessed cars travelling at incredible speeds on these roads.
Farmers tell us that livestock on these hitherto quiet roads are now being killed and injured, as many of these roads are unfenced. Rather than fence off these roads, thus denying access to walkers and other users who wish to wander a few yards off the roads perhaps to have a picnic, local councils should impose a speed limit of perhaps 30 mph on these roads. On unfenced roads, warning signs should be erected advising motorists to be on the look out for farm animals.
The sense of freedom engendered by our unfenced roads in the remoter areas is much treasured by visitors. Let us keep it that way. - Yours, etc.,
