Sir, – Noreen Giffney from Fahan, Co Donegal, recently commented in your letters page, "As someone who lives in the South and works in the North, I would ask the various political figures to remember the thousands of us who travel from either side to the other on a daily basis for work" (December 2nd).

I was reminded of my late mother who, when visiting Buncrana from neighbouring Derry City, would always respond to the question “How are things in the North?” with the reply “You tell me, you live further north than me!” – Yours, etc,
