Madam, – The Irish Parliamentary Society of former Oireachtas members proposes that the Senate should be retained in view of its so-called valuable legislative role (Home News, March 2nd). If the forthcoming Senate elections take place, are we to witness the spectacle of former Fianna Fáil TDs roundly rejected by a furious electorate entering by way of nomination to the upper chamber? I would suggest that the incoming government defer the Senate elections until its future is decided by way of referendum.
The nation, I think, will survive a vacant Senate for the next 100 days. – Yours, etc,
