Sir, - Paddy Agnew reports from Rome (October 2nd) that Vatican Radio marked the resignation of Cardinal Daly with a "fulsome tribute". This surprises me.
My Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the word "fulsome" as having the exclusive meanings "cloying, excessive, disgusting by excess (of flattery, servility, exaggerated affection)." Tellingly, the word is pronounced "foolsome".
