Sir, The inspired idea of the Irish Government's proposal of talks, like the Dayton ones over the problems in the former Yugoslavia, must not be ignored and is no threat to anyone, if seen in the right light. Even if the British idea of elections in the North exists.

Intensive talks and negotiations can only be a good thing, even if they fail. The most important thing is that everyone must make a real effort to make them work, as this is a chance.

It will never be easy. Let us hope that there will be enlightened leaders on all sides who can achieve enlightened compromise under responsible stewardship from the United States or more international guidance. No one should forget the urgency. Put away all prejudice everywhere and struggle to keep the peace in Northern Ireland, so that we can live together in Ireland, North and South, without fear and with peace. With its very real benefits economically and for the general wellbeing of all people living on the island of Ireland, the peace dividend is worth it.

To keep this may at times seem impossible, but it is an ideal that must be striven and prayed for by everybody. Human weaknesses must somehow be transcended, mutual interests put aside. Britain must go on talking to Ireland, each voice to each voice. There will need to be sacrifices made all over the place.
