Madam, - I would like to clarify our proposal regarding the Easter holidays.
We propose that the Easter holidays for educational institutions be held in the last two weeks of April, in the same way as the Whit bank holiday has been settled on the first Monday of June, irrespective of the date of Whit Sunday.
This proposal has the support of many in the educational, transport, tourism and healthcare sectors.
We do not suggest that the religious Easter be on a fixed date. That would be far too complicated an issue to resolve, although the World Council of Churches addressed the matter positively in 1997, Pope Paul VI was in favour of it, and it was recommended in the Vatican II Council.
Fixing the Easter holidays, as they have done in Britain, is simple, achievable and beneficial.
- Yours, etc,
JOHN C DOYLE, The Amicable Society, Merchant's Road, Galway.
