Madam, - Has the definition of entrepreneur been changed? I always believed that it referred to a person who achieved success through fair play as well as natural talent.

Therefore I was astonished to learn that the World Entrepreneur of the Year award (The Irish Times, June 12th) had been given to someone who operated in, and accepted assisted passage from, apartheid South Africa.

This was a state that was considered a pariah worldwide, and which offered immigrant businessmen a considerable advantages on the basis of being white - a black workforce who didn't have to be paid fair wages.

Have we already developed a collective amnesia regarding apartheid? Even today, millions of people in South Africa are still suffering the effects of the apartheid legacy, and to honour someone who contributed to the support of that regime is surely an insult to those who suffered, and who still suffer indirectly, the effects of apartheid's brutality. - Yours, etc,
