Dog owners and public areas

A chara, – A beautiful walk this morning in Dublin’s Phoenix Park was somewhat spoiled by a new and unpleasant phenomenon. Autumn leaves have been replaced by a growing number of brightly coloured bags of dog dirt that increasingly decorate our trees, fences and footpaths. While it is understandable that dog owners do not wish to carry their unsavoury parcels for too great a distance, walking a dog in a public area has its obligations, and in the absence of a rubbish bin these packages should be taken home and disposed of appropriately. – Yours, etc,

FIONÁN Ó NUALLÁIN,
