Digital access to ‘The Irish Times’

Sir, – The introduction of subscriptions for digital access to The Irish Times is long overdue.

It always struck me as bizarre to be able to read this paper on the internet for no charge, yet have to pay for the hard copy. You didn’t need an O-level in economics to realise this was unsustainable.

Newspapers as we know them are an endangered species. Don’t just take my word for it, ask Rupert Murdoch, who, when appearing at the Leveson Inquiry stated that because of disruptive technology, the days of the printed newspaper were numbered.

This is regrettable, as I much prefer the tactile experience of rummaging through the paper, deluding myself I can do the crossword.

I wish The Irish Times well in this venture. Obtaining a hard copy in this neck of the woods is a hit and miss affair, and it goes without saying I shall continue to obtain whenever possible.

In this life, you get what you pay for, and in getting The Irish Times be it online or from the local newsagent, you do get that little bit extra. Good luck. – Yours, etc FRANK GREANEY Formby, Liverpool.
