A chara, - It was with great sadness that I read about the death of David Ervine. He was indeed a very progressive unionist, faithful to his party's name. He represented the poor and underprivileged with integrity and determination.

Madam, - I interviewed David Ervine for a documentary on the Irish peace process for US television in 2001. It is with great sadness that I learned of his passing.
Among many interviews conducted, his revealed a man of great heart, honesty and humility. He had grown through and ultimately away from violence having come to realise its futility. He embodied great pain and regret for his past transgressions but great love and hope for the future generations of his family, community, and country.
This was a great man, and his loss is a great one. - Yours, etc,
