Sir, – I wholeheartedly agree with Tom Garvin’s article on the bleak future of the Irish university (Education Today, May 1st). The attempt to commercialise Irish universities must be stopped and academic freedom must be restored.

I too have noticed the creeping proliferation of nonsensical management-speak in other areas of Irish life.

I spent four years studying at Trinity College back in the 1970s and I credit the intellectual atmosphere there with teaching me how to think. I would hope that this opportunity would not be denied to the present generation of students, and their lecturers. – Yours, etc,
