Madam, - I see that the Road Safety Authority seeks to learn from the experience of other countries ("RSA to compile list of extra safety options", Motors supplement, July 5th). One lesson which has been known throughout the length and breadth of Europe for many years is that cycle tracks need to be protected from other traffic by a physical barrier substantial enough to prevent encroachment.

After weeks of disruption on the Blackrock bypass, we now find ourselves with a section of the (discontinuous!) bus lane marked out as a cycle path by a white line. I can assure you from personal experience that this will be treated with the contempt which it deserves.

Have we really learnt so little? Will someone please join up the thinking? - Yours etc,
