Sir, – Conor Lally (Weekend Review, January 19th) gives an overview of the conditions of our prisons.

I was in Cloverhill Prison recently on a professional visit. The prisoner shares a cell with three other prisoners where they remain locked in for 23 hours out of 24. The toilet is in the cell – there is no privacy – and all food is consumed in the cell. The prisoners can be left with no toilet paper for a day due to cutbacks and there is a sense of less and less care and humanity among the prison guards, again due to cutbacks.

Reading Conor Lally’s article I didn’t get a sense of these realities. – Yours, etc,
