CRISIS AT AER LINGUS

GERARD REYNOLDS,

GERARD REYNOLDS,

Sir - So the unions are threatening strike action (again) if redundancies are made among Aer Lingus pilots.

So once again the travelling public can look forward to disrupted plans and chaotic scenes at Irish airports. And our aviation industry will again be condemned as an international embarrassment.

All this is is more compelling evidence that the dinosaur that is the State airline needs to be put out into the private sector where it can be run properly, with costs tightly controlled and business leaders held accountable for their actions - and where the airline and its customers cannot be held hostage on a whim.

I know several people in the IT industry who were made redundant in the past year due to the ebb and flow of economics. Are Aer Lingus pilots more entitled to make a living then those in the IT sector, or in other areas experiencing downturn? That seems to be the opinion of the union leaders, who clearly have little or no concept of the realities of running a business.

To the pilots and the union bosses I would say: Please stop throwing your toys out of your prams. Accept the situation, and move on. - Yours, etc.,
