Cork’s Viking heritage

Sir, – Is there to be no end to the efforts of Corkonians to filch history, heritage and culture from other Irish towns and cities? The latest is the attempt to claim the oldest Viking settlement in Ireland (“Viking centre discovered in Cork city predates Waterford settlement”, News, January 10th).

Robust archaeological, dendrochronological and archive evidence still places the first Waterford settlement 20 to 30 years ahead of Cork.

Having already laid exclusive claim to proletarian delicacies like the drisheen, spiced beef, black and white pudding and the rasher (something Limerick and Waterford people would have a contrary view on), what is next on their list? The Waterford blaa? – Yours, etc,

LIAM CAHILL,

Drumree, Co Meath.
