EU is accountable and democratic
Sir, – The statement by Simon O’Neill (January 11th) that the EU is “unaccountable and wilfully antidemocratic” is open to challenge.
The EU is made up of nearly 30 democratic countries each of which signed a treaty to cooperate in matters of mutual interest. Decisions are made by the democratically elected representatives of those countries meeting on a regular basis and by the parliament elected in European wide elections.
The EU is not perfect but it is the most advanced example of international cooperation in the world.
Unaccountable and wilfully antidemocratic it is not.– Yours, etc,
