Madam, - As I walk or drive through the area where I live, I notice a growing number of dangerous dogs whose owners persist in walking them without muzzles. The latest fashion seems to be to let such animals walk without a lead. Even more stupidly, I have seen children walking such dogs without adult supervision.

Such behaviour is not confined to so-called "rough areas", and it is evident that breeds such as as the Staffordshire bull terrier, pit bull terrier and Rottweiler are becoming common in all areas. Last week I was shocked to see a man walking a Japanese Tosa, unleashed and muzzle-free, up the length of a local road.

After the savaging of a young boy in Co Offaly over the weekend, it would be prudent for this issue to be addressed quickly and effectively. In particular, dog wardens should be more evident on our streets and estates, not just from nine to five, but all day, for seven days of the week. I fear that nothing will be done until somebody is killed, which is the norm in this country. - Is mise,
