Sir, – The ceremonies to commemorate those Irish men and women who died in past wars or in the service of the United Nations seek to propagate a myth that there is a moral equivalence between dying in the cause of peace-keeping, freedom and justice, and dying in furthering the cause of economic and political imperialisms.
The ceremonies are, of course, in line with the current official policy of drawing this State further into collaboration with such imperialisms, eg the transformation of Shannon Airport into a jump-off point for warmongering, official kidnapping and torture, and our continuing participation in the war in Afghanistan.
I wonder will we ever see the day when we will hold ceremonies to commemorate those killed (or helped to be killed) by Irish men and women in past (and, more importantly, present) wars? – Yours, etc,
