Cheep broadband

A chara, – Much criticism has been levelled at the Government in respect of its plan for delivering rural broadband, but perhaps this is misplaced.

Over the course of last year, an engineering firm, acting in pursuit of the plan, has installed kilometres of fibreoptic cable on the telephone poles along the main roads and back roads of this entire area.

And there it remains.

No cable has found its way into a house.

This has not been an entire waste. The avian population is taking full advantage of the new perching possibilities, with starlings, jackdaws and the resident sparrow hawk and kestrel in particular availing of the enhanced facility.

It confirms that the Government’s plan is indeed, as many of us have long suspected, for the birds. – Is mise,
