Bonus points for maths

Madam, – Stephanie Cremen is absolutely right (April 9th)

Madam, – Stephanie Cremen is absolutely right (April 9th). It is unfair to reward one form of intelligence at the expense of another. What will happen if at some future date the economy needs more French speakers or German speakers? Will the Minister award extra points for French or German? Besides, it is a futile exercise that has failed elsewhere. Those pupils who are good at maths will study it and become engineers and scientists as the Minister wants. While those lured by the prospect of extra points will reluctantly enter the maths class and after their exam will never use maths again in whatever career they follow. – Yours, etc,
