Sir, David Thunder claims to hold the high moral ground on abortion, but his stance is simplistic while the problem is quite the opposite.
Here in London, the endless stream of Irish women arriving at the abortion clinics - some to times greater than the official Irish count indicates the need of Irish women for medical termination.
It might help to assess the problem if Mr Thunder would spell out precisely his requirements. Is it total rejection of abortion in any circumstances? A legal ban on women choosing to abort outside the Irish State? Police and court intervention for any Irish citizen using the services in Britain?
Does he simply seek the illusion that abortion does not exist in Ireland? Would he reject a right to travel, the free availability of information? Would he be happy if the problem was simply removed from Irish soil? Or does he demand male control of female bodies?
The truth and the tragedy is that abortion has always been with us. It predates the Christian religion the Jewish faith, the ancient world, the mists of prehistory.
How does Mr Thunder visualise another referendum? A simple "yes" or "no" to abortion? Might as well ask if you want sin, crime or injustice in Ireland.
How would Mr Thunder have dealt with the "X" case?
One wonders, if there is to be yet another referendum, should men be permitted to vote? - Yours, etc.,
