An outdoor pool for Dublin

Sir, – In calling for an outdoor swimming pool for Dublin (Opinion & Analysis, December 13th), Ciarán Cuffe is obviously unaware that we already have one. It's called the Irish Sea. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN CULLEN,

Sir, – Dublin needs functioning outdoor community pools. In the past, water polo was played in Blackrock Baths on summer Saturday nights followed by medicinal hot drinks in O’Rourke’s. On Sundays the action moved to the northside, in Clontarf Baths. These Dublin venues provided a glimpse of a very different world than my home in 1970s Belfast. Many of the participants in those halcyon days north and south (of Dublin Bay) were sustained to contribute a lifetime of effort to their chosen sport throughout the island. But that is what good community facilities do: they build communities. Dublin needs to build an outdoor community pool. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN MURPHY,
