Madam, – A rail link to north-west Donegal would revitalise a neglected area (Christian Morris, December 29th), but the natural connection, by geography and tradition, is to Derry not Sligo.

The cuttings and embankments of the long-defunct Letterkenny and Burtonport Extension Railway are still visible; a promise to reopen “That Old Sinner” – as The Irish Times dubbed it in 1917 on account of its chequered history – would be a guaranteed vote-winner in the forthcoming election. – Yours, etc,
