Internet of everything gives me the chills after SuperValu attack

Must everything be connected, and controlled, via the web?

Sir, – Following yesterday’s hacking attack on SuperValu’s, and others, freezers – demonstrating that I may soon be able to buy a cooked chicken courtesy of a hacked freezer – isn’t it time we think again about the usefulness and safety of “The Internet of Everything” connectivity?

It seems every household item these days can be connected, and controlled, via the net. I do question the necessity and safety of all this connectivity.

How necessary is it really to have an internet-connected fridge, or robo-vacuum, or heating system, or fitness heart-rate monitor?

Convenient sometimes, yes, but necessary? And with the increased ability of rogue hackers using AI to find vulnerabilities, perhaps too convenient for the hackers to engage in troublemaking or ransom attacks. – Yours, etc.
