Sir, – Joe Glackin’s letter (“Regrets? I’ve forgotten a few − which is one of the benefits of being in my 70s,”, Letters, September 24th) ending: “ ... all we can really do is muddle through as best we can” reminds me of a dinner in Dublin many years ago when I found myself sitting next to the late, great TK Whitaker.
I mumbled some rather pathetic comment along the lines of: “It must be remarkable to find yourself at the centre of European banking policy.” He leant over and whispered: “We’re all groping in the dark.” – Yours, etc,
