Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre: Change is good, but not this change

With the right architect, its facade and interior could become something truly exciting

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Regarding the article by Finn McRedmond: “Let’s not cling to ugly buildings because a few Dubliners are allergic to change,” May 7th: Vanity has already destroyed too many interesting corners of Dublin. Just think of the Georgian terrace on Fitzwilliam Street lost to the ESB – and look at it now. We need to listen and reconsider.

Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre clearly needs refurbishment. The proposed replacement is even uglier than what’s there now. The current centre may be pastiche, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting – even unique – among so many recent bland developments.

With the right architect, its facade and interior could become something truly exciting. We already have enough upgraded, sterilised shopping centres; just look at Frascati in Blackrock. Change is good, but only the right change. – Yours, etc,

JOERG SCHULZE,

Mount Merrion,

Co Dublin.
