Sir, – As a dual Irish-Australian citizen, I am tired of the romanticisation of Australia as one of “opportunity” and escapism (Laura Kennedy, “I never thought I wanted to live in Australia and now I’m struggling to leave” April 22nd).
For white Irish emigrants, it may be so, but for the indigenous communities of Australia, such “opportunities” often do not exist.
First Nations people are 8.8 times more likely to experience homelessness than non-indigenous Australians. They have significantly lower life expectancies than non-indigenous Australians. They are also less likely to be in employment than non-indigenous Australians.
Perhaps we should reflect on our own position and privilege when it comes to discussions of modern-day Australia, and the structural racism at its core? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I was saddened to read Laura Kennedy’s recent column announcing her departure from Australia. Like many readers, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed her insightful musings on Australian life.
Her columns have offered a fascinating glimpse into a country that continues to captivate so many Irish people. I hope wherever she settles next, she’ll continue writing about her local surroundings. Thanks, Laura, your articles were fair dinkum rippers. – Yours, etc,
