Voluntary contributions are essential for schools

Sir, – Congratulations to John McHugh on his excellent Opinion piece (“Voluntary contributions are essential to our schools,” Opinion, March 3rd).

In particular, his sentiment that “voluntary contributions and annual fundraisers are not vanity projects. They are survival mechanisms”, can be confirmed by the hundreds of parents who run around organising cake sales, Christmas card sales, calendar sales, raffles, Christmas fairs ... all to keep the schools functioning. – Yours, etc,
