Sir, – Why in so many assault cases does the defence list in mitigation the perpetrator’s sporting achievements? A talent on the pitch, a cup winner. Why should a great right foot be a mitigating factor? Is a mediocre chess player at higher risk of reoffending? – Yours, etc,
