A chara, – In her article regarding the rules governing the wearing of school uniforms, Jen Hogan wonders “which school rules make sense?” (“Uniforms, piercings, haircuts . . . what school rules still make sense?”, Health + Family, January 4th).
Generally speaking, the teaching staff in a school, the parents’ association, along with the principal and the board of management, spend quite an amount of time reaching a consensus on the uniform policy which will be appropriate for the pupils under their care. This is no small task, considering the high pupil numbers in many of our schools.
If our articulate and bright students have objections, queries and suggestions, these concerns reach the school authorities very quickly indeed, which is a good thing. Generally, any problems which students may have regarding the uniformity of school dress can be ironed out, so to speak. Both parents and teachers alike do their upmost to explain the reasoning behind their school’s policy on uniform wearing. Students today question everything. That it is a sign of healthy student-teacher relationships. – Is mise,
