More than 3,000 people, or 20 per cent, of the daily commuting population living in Co Meath have officially registered their wish to work in Meath and end having to commute to Dublin. They posted their opinion on the www.workinmeath.ie website.
Since the site was launched by the Meath County Enterprise Board and Meath County Council last year, it has revealed that more than 40 per cent of those commuting to Dublin each day are employed in finance, IT or software.
"The continued growth of the database proves this county contains a vast reservoir of highly skilled people working in banking, funds management, administration, customer support, software development and IT," said Frank Fitzmaurice, the council's economic development officer. "It also proves the skills pool in Meath has an even stronger desire than ever to find suitable employment within the county in order to eliminate commuting from their daily lives."
It is believed the Meath skills pool is beginning to attract interest from Ireland's corporate and business circles.
According to Frank Fitzmaurice, "following the Meath Investment Showcase in Dublin's IFSC earlier, this year has seen a noticeable pick-up in interest in the county as a business location".
