A woman in her 50s had to be airlifted to hospital this afternoon after her car fell 100 metres from the top of Howth Head in Co Dublin and became wedged at the foot of a steep incline.

The Coast Guard Cliff Rescue Team were called to the scene shortly before midday after the car, in which the woman was the sole occupant, fell 100 meters down a steep hill at the summit of the popular tourist spot..

She was removed from the car with assistance from Dublin fire brigade paramedics and was subsequently airlifted to Tallaght hospital.

Her condition is said to be stable. Garda have launched an investigation to try and establish the cause of the incident.
