A woman was killed yesterday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on the N5 near Swinford, Co Mayo.
She was named locally as Tara Ryan (21) from Johnstown, Swinford, a popular member of the local GAA club. She was also a talented athlete.
Ms Ryan was driving a car shortly after 1pm when the crash, which also involved a truck and a minibus, occurred. She was unaccompanied at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minibus was brought to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for treatment. The driver of the truck was uninjured.
The main N5 Westport to Dublin road was closed until late last night following the impact as gardaí carried out a forensic examination of the scene. Gardaí at Swinford are appealing for witnesses.
