Gardai have appealed for witnesses to a road accident in Co Kilkenny in which a man in his mid-50s was killed. Mr Peter Murphy, from Annestown in Co Waterford, died after being struck by a car on the main street of Piltown at 6.10 p.m. on Wednesday. An employee of RTE at Mount Leinster, he was married with children and was due to retire from his job yesterday.

Mr Murphy was an active member of a community enterprise group based in Annes town and neighbouring villages which was featured in The Irish Times on Wednesday.

He played a key role in developing an enterprise centre at Dunhill which employs 20 people. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Carrick-on-Suir Garda station, telephone 051-640024.
