St Patrick's Well, which has been a place of pilgrimage in Armagh since the fifth century, is being threatened by a major housing development between the Mullacreevie estate and the Callan river.

Thousands of people go to the neglected well every June 29th. Its water is reputed to have healing powers.

Concern ever the well's fate has been expressed by the local historical society, Cumann Seanchasis Ard Macha. A subcommittee has been set up to investigate the likely impact of the housing project.

The city council has called on retired Armagh county museum curator, Mr Roger Weatherup, for advice.
