Environmental chiefs have said 1,400 homes and businesses in north Dublin hit by a bacteria scare in water are safe to boil supplies.

Dublin City Council said this evening no traces of E.coli have been found in pipes to more than a dozen streets around Clontarf.

“Test results this evening show water quality in the St Lawrence’s area have significantly improved,” the council said.

“All tests undertaken by Dublin City Council’s central laboratory have confirmed that there is no presence of E.coli in any of the samples.”

The council said householders and businesses can boil water supplies for drinking or cooking while further tests continue over coming days and the system is cleaned.

“It is safe to use water directly from the taps to bathe in, wash dishes and do laundry,” the council said.

Some 220 water supply zones around the St Lawrence’s area of Clontarf were hit by the scare. Traces of bacteria were found in some supplies.

Independent TD Finian McGrath later said he will raise concerns over the water supplies with Health Minister Dr James Reilly, the Health Service Executive and the council.

“We have to get to the heart of this matter,” he said.

“When did the council actually know before they informed the local residents?”
