An old first World War grenade was discovered in Dublin tonight and made safe by Army ordnance experts.

Gardaí who had examined the device found in the Grand Canal called the Army bomb disposal team to Upper Mount Street at about 4.30pm.

It was discovered to be an old World War I era grenade, a Defence Forces spokesman said.

"The grenade was removed and destroyed by controlled explosion at a safe location. The team arrived on scene at 4.30pm, the scene was declared safe at 5.15pm when the device was removed and later destroyed.
