Kuala Lumpur - The Malaysian capital yesterday cleaned up after the most violent anti-government demonstration since the sacked Finance Minister, Mr Anwar Ibrahim, was arrested five weeks ago.

Two policemen and at least a dozen protesters were wounded in Saturday's clashes and 241 people detained. Some 2,000 demonstrators, calling on the Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to step down, threw stones and iron rods for several hours before being dispersed by repeated firing of water cannon and tear gas.
