The majority of first-time callers to a new helpline for victims of abuse did not seek counselling, but requested help in tracing records and improving educational skills, writes Alison Healy.

The National Office for Victims of Abuse (NOVA) was set up by the Government in February to give support and advice to those abused in institutions as children.

Between telephone calls and visits, NOVA has been receiving up to 100 inquiries a week. People wishing to trace their records accounted for many of these calls, said Mr Kevin Brady, NOVA manager. Callers have sought records in relation to health and education, in addition to information about relatives.

The NOVA free telephone helpline is 1800 252524 and operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
