A US Navy sailor was killed while handling unexploded ordnance in central Iraq Friday, coalition ground forces said.
Three other sailors were injured in the blast early this morning in the town of al-Kut on the Tigris River southeast of Baghdad but were in stable condition, spokesman Captain David Connolly said in a statement.
"The incident is under investigation," he said, adding that the name of the dead sailor would not be released until next-of-kin had been notified.
A total of 26 US service personnel have died in fighting or accidents in Iraq since May 1st, when US President George W. Bush declared the war on Iraq effectively over, according to an AFP toll.
